Raised on an Island

Home for the weekend- LI’s North Fork, New York

I love visiting the east end of Long Island where I grew up, but I especially love it in the summer time! Most people know Long Island’s east end for the Hamptons, but that’s only one fork.

A short ferry ride from New London CT is the North Fork of LI. I grew up on there, best known for pick your own everything – strawberries in June, peaches and nectarines in August, pumpkins in October. Stay tuned for a post about picking your own pumpkins!

When I was younger I would sit in the strawberry field just picking and eating, picking and eating. When it was time to leave I had BARELY filled a quart, whereas my mom and friend had picked about 3 quarts each… opps! Farmstand-fresh strawberries are still my favorite fruit. Oh, and starting Thanksgiving weekend, you can cut down your own piece of a Hallmark Movie on one of the many Christmas tree farms we have out here. Bring your saw, rope, and gloves, and head out to hunt down the perfect tree. I look forward to this every year, so check back in December to hear how this year’s tree hunt turns out!

The pumpkins, strawberries, and fresh-cut blue spruces aren’t even the best part of where I spent my youth- beaches, beaches, beaches! The beaches are by far one of the best things about LI. Staying on the nostalgic note, everyday after I was picked up from work at my teenage, part-time, waterpark job, I would immediately come home, switch into my swimsuit, and head to the nearby beach. Living so close and being able to do that almost EVERY NIGHT is a luxury that I didn’t know I had until I moved away. Thinking back, I think I spent a majority of my early years in the LI Sound. I fancied myself a mermaid then, so maybe I am !

When I arrived home for my weeklong vacation this past Friday, I immediately did two of my favorite things: Take a walk along the shore of the LI sound with mom, and eat a NY pizza. Ahhhh how I’ve missed you both. We love getting pizza from a great little place nearby called Roadhouse Brick Oven Pizza. Check them out you wont be disappointed!

They also have the best house garlicky dressing on their monstrous salads. So yum! This was after I shared half with my mother – look how huge and fresh!

Since today is in the 90s here, I hear the beach calling my name! Until later…Stay cool everyone! ~kk
