The Pretty Before the Storm

Beautiful balconies and blue skies on Magazine St. before tropical storm Barry

New Orleans is one of my absolute favorite places to visit. The culture, music, food, and shopping makes it a fantastic getaway location whether you have a weekend or a week. I typically start and end my summers with a week in NoLa but fair warning – it is extremely hot in the summers! Not only that, but now I am preparing for a category 1 hurricane that will hit here in the next few days! I know – what?! The Northeast doesn’t get hurricanes until september -October…

Since I’m busy battening down the hatches here, although locals assure me that where I’m staying is not in a flood zone, I am a bit concerned. I mean, this must be the NoLa version of snow days – the city shuts down for 1-2 days while people stay huddled inside or try to find higher ground. Instead of digging cars out of snow, they hope they don’t flood and are left to dry them out.

Not to worry though, on a good day in July, it reaches upper nineties with real feel temps into the 100s. Which brings me to my next point – If I were to recommend the best time to visit NoLa, having come down here during every season, I would say that the months of February- April are your best bet. During those months, the confederate jasmine is blooming (I know, how could something with that name smell so good, but trust me, it does) and festival season is in full swing. NoLa literally has a festival for everything! Complete with free music and awesome food and beverages for purchase. During my visits over the last few years, I have attended the Po-Boy festival in November, the ever popular Jazz Festival in April-May (Eddie Vedder, enough said ), and have seen adverts for a Creole Tomato Festival and Snowball festival. New Orleanians love a reason to celebrate and so do I. Stay tuned for more of my favorite places to visit in NoLa. Stay dry everyone! ~kk
